I, Me, Myself

Dear reader,

Thank you for taking time to read my blog, it is a pleasure for me to share my experience with you. I started this blog in October 2017, and posting on and off since then. When I started blogging, I was a full time engineer in industry and working part time as a researcher. Now that I am a full time PhD student, in which I am highly motivated to collaborate with industry, I will be sharing similar experience from a researchers perspective.

I am currently a PhD student at Hasselt University in Hasselt, Belgium. I started my PhD in November 2018, and my current job includes teaching, assisting bachelors and masters students and conducting research. My research is on timber-concrete composite structures, which I am studying analytically, numerically and experimentally.

In Fall of 2014, I moved to USA for masters degree. My hard work and extracurricular involvement paid off and with Fulbright Fellowship I started my master's in Texas A&M University. My 2 years on College Station, Texas has changed my life a lot both as academic and the way I am looking at life.

Between 2016-2018 I worked in industry for 2 years while conducting research with some of my former professors. I wanted to take this time in industry to know what life in private sector is about before deciding for a research career which I thought what I wanted since my bachelor's degree.

I pursued my Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from Manisa Celal Bayar University, located in Manisa, Turkey. On my second year, I started getting involved in research and received research grant from prestigious research institute,Science and Technological Research Council of Turkey. On my third year, besides heavy work load of technical classes and projects, I volunteered to take part in conferences that took place in MCBU and I was responsible for international study abroad students in Engineering Department. I knew I wanted to go to grad school and coming across Fulbright poster changed my academic life and future plans. On my fourth year, 1st semester my friends and I did something exceptional and attended the Buyap Steel Bridge Competition. On my second semester I went for Erasmus to Poland, Politechnika Krakowska (Krakow University of Technology).

I really enjoy writing here, I hope you''ll enjoy reading my blog.

  1. when did you write this post ? still thinking on doing both practice and research (PhD) in parallel ? i wouldnt recommend at all ... focus on the PhD if you really aim/love it :)

i tried both too, but never in parallel...i came to the conclusion that i´m only happy in academia or as a consultant applying the tools and expertise gained as a scientist

I wish you all the best Elif!
